Which is a better fit?
Keep AppClose if your court order names it or you need certified records, recorded calls, or an attorney who can follow your chats. Chickadee Bandit fits parents who want each home kept private, an append-only shared record either parent can export, and the other parent joining free.
Where AppClose shines — and where it doesn't
AppClose has no feature tiers. One plan includes messages that cannot be edited or deleted, unlimited audio and video calls that can be recorded and transcribed when both parents consent, certified electronic business records for U.S. users, a custody calendar with fifteen schedule templates, expense reimbursement with a built-in payment service, and unlimited file storage. For a court-facing record, it is the least expensive complete package we know of.
It is still priced per parent. A subscription covers only the account that buys it, and the other parent needs one of their own to see messages and answer calls, though one parent can buy the other's. And like every dedicated co-parenting app, it holds the co-parenting record and nothing else about either home.
Side by side
| AppClose | Chickadee Bandit | |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing | Per parent, in the U.S.: $7.99/mo on the web or $8.99/mo through the app; $83.88/yr on the web ($98.99 through the app); $143.76 for two years, on the web only. Every plan includes every feature. Sixty-day free trial with no card; fee waivers for financial hardship and domestic-violence survivors, and discounts for military and veterans. | One household plan from $6/mo (or $60/yr). One parent sponsors the co-parenting space and the other parent joins free. 30-day free trial with no card. |
| Who one payment covers | Only the account that buys it. The other parent needs an active subscription of their own to see messages and answer calls; one parent can buy an annual or two-year plan for the other on the web. | The sponsoring parent's plan covers the space. The other parent joins free and needs no plan of their own. |
| Messaging | No user can edit or delete a chat message; each shows when it was sent and when it was viewed. Co-Parent Assist offers optional AI suggestions to soften a draft before you send it. | Co-parenting spaces are append-only: no member can edit or delete a sent message, and the setting cannot be loosened by one parent. Timestamps on send and on the recipient's first view are set by the server and appear in the exported record. No tone checker. |
| Calling & video | Unlimited audio and video calls. With both participants' consent, calls can be recorded and transcribed, with no limit on the number of recorded calls. | None. Chickadee Bandit does not offer in-app calling, recording, or transcription. |
| Records | Free exports of messages and shared images, call details, requests, expenses and check-ins as digitally signed PDFs; unlimited Certified Electronic Business Records for U.S. users. Calendars, notes and child profiles are not part of that export. After a subscription ends, Read-Only Mode keeps the records viewable and exportable at no charge. | Either parent can export the space's records at any time without the other's approval: the custody record, the parents' messages, schedule and holiday history, swaps, handoff notes, the exchange journal and a list of its photos as one print-styled document with a cover page and checksums (downloaded as a PDF, or as a verified copy anyone can check for seven years); any single report, including the agreed schedule, as its own PDF or verified copy or as CSV; or a ZIP archive of machine-readable files, photos included. Not a certified record. |
| Custody schedule | Fifteen schedule templates or a custom one, a separate schedule for each child, event comments and history, and calendars shared with people who do not use the app. | Rotation patterns (2-2-3, week-on/week-off, alternating weekends, custom) with countersigned swaps: a swap is a proposal until the other parent approves, then it locks and lands on both calendars. Holiday schedules for each child alternate by even and odd years, are agreed by both parents once, and land over the rotation every year. An exchange journal records whether each handoff happened as planned, late or not at all, with photos, plus dated journal entries about anything else; the other parent can acknowledge or dispute each entry. The agreed schedule and the agreed holidays print in words as their own documents. |
| Expenses & payments | Expenses by category with scanned receipts, and reimbursement requests marked approved, declined or paid. Its ipayou payment service moves money with no transaction fee, in the U.S. only. | Log a cost with a receipt photo, split evenly, by exact amounts, or by saved category percentages, and request reimbursement through two-party approval. A running settle-up balance keeps score. No payment processing. |
| Professional access | Attorneys, guardians ad litem, mental-health professionals and court staff connect through AppClose Pro and can follow shared chats without posting in them. A professional can ask for a stored certified export, which the parent approves or declines. | No practitioner accounts. A parent can hand a mediator or attorney a verified copy of the record, or of one report such as the agreed parenting schedule, which they can check through the link printed on the PDF. |
| Without the other parent | Solo Mode keeps your own records, schedules and expenses, and sends requests and events to someone who does not use the app, by links that expire after ten days. | No equivalent. The shared record needs both parents in the space. |
| Two homes, one record | One shared Circle for the children's details, the co-parent and anyone else you add. Each parent's own household life lives somewhere else. | Each parent keeps a private household — their own calendar, chores, and new partner — and the space between them holds only what they co-manage. Neither home can see into the other. |
| Governance | Each parent manages their own account; no shared approval model. | Both parents are equal stewards. Deleting the space, removing a member, shortening record retention, or removing a records app requires the other parent's approval. |
| Beyond co-parenting | Co-parenting only. Available in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and Trinidad and Tobago; certified records and ipayou are U.S.-only. | Over 100 installable household apps for each parent's own home, on the same plan. |

Chickadee Bandit, on two phones
Two homes, one schedule
What happens in this video
- Mom proposes the standing schedule, alternating weeks, with a note on why.
- On Dad's phone, in his own household, it arrives as a proposal, not a fact.
- Mom's calendar shows who has Lily today and when the next handoff is.
- A week later, Dad needs a Saturday for Grandma's 80th, so he requests a swap instead of editing the calendar.
- Mom agrees from her phone.
- The swapped day appears on Dad's calendar, marked as a swap.
- Lily's day also shows on each parent's own Today screen, tagged with the shared space.
When AppClose is the right call
If your case is contested and you need recorded calls, certified records, or an attorney or guardian ad litem who can follow the conversation, AppClose does all of it on one plan, for less than the other court-facing platforms. If a court order names it, keep using it. Its Solo Mode also helps when the other parent will not install anything, which we cannot: our shared record needs both parents in the space.
Where we differ
Chickadee Bandit is built for the long stretch after the order: years of handoffs, receipts, and school forms between two homes that each stay private. The shared space holds append-only messages, custody swaps that lock only when the other parent countersigns, and expenses both parents approve, and the exported record includes the schedule and holiday history alongside the messages. We make no claims about admissibility; that is a court's decision, and we do not produce certified records.
Moving from AppClose
Your AppClose history cannot be imported. Export your records, and download any call recordings and transcripts separately, before you close the account; if you only cancel, Read-Only Mode keeps them exportable. Then create a space, choose Co-parenting, and send the other parent a join link. See the co-parenting overview for what the space sets up.
The feature list is not fixed
Every other product on this page is a fixed set of features: it does what it does, and a need it did not anticipate gets a no. Chickadee Bandit is built from small apps, and a household can add one of its own. An admin describes the app in a paragraph on the Apps page and the hub builds and installs it, using the AI credits that come with every plan; someone who writes code can start from any of the open-source apps and install their own version from a URL. A custom app gets the same checks as the ones we ship: it declares what it reads and writes, keeps its data in your household's own database, and the hub refuses anything it did not ask for.
