The two widgets

Chickadee Today shows your family's day: events, chores, and reminders, with the time and who each one is for. Anything overdue shows its time in red. Tap the widget to open your dashboard.

Chickadee App shows one of your household's apps, and lets you act on it right from the home screen:

  • Tasks: your open tasks. Tap the circle to complete one.
  • Medications: today's doses. Tap to log one as taken.
  • Streaks: your streaks and their day counts. Tap to log today; tap again to undo it.
  • Countdowns: days left until the dates in your Occasions app.

Both come in small, medium, and large. Bigger sizes show more rows. Add as many as you like, for example one Chickadee App widget for Tasks and another for Medications.

Add a widget

  1. Install the Chickadee Bandit app and sign in. Open it once so it can load your household's data.
  2. Touch and hold an empty spot on your home screen until the apps jiggle, then tap Edit (or +) and Add Widget.
  3. Search for Chickadee, pick a widget, swipe to the size you want, and tap Add Widget.
  4. For Chickadee App, touch and hold the widget, tap Edit Widget, and choose the App it should show. Only apps your household has installed are listed.

Which streaks appear is set inside the Chickadee Bandit app, not in the widget editor: open Settings → Streak Widget and pick up to three. If you pick none, it shows your own streaks first.

What you'll see, and whose

Widgets show the household you have open in the app. If you switch households, a Chickadee App widget you've never edited follows along; one where you chose the app yourself keeps showing that app, and will tell you if it isn't set up in the new household.

The Tasks widget lists your own tasks. The Medications widget shows an adult everyone's doses and shows a child only their own. The Streaks widget never shows someone else's private streaks.

Home screen widgets are visible to anyone who picks up your phone, and that includes medication names and doses. If that matters in your household, use the Tasks or Today widget on a shared device instead of Medications.

Keeping it up to date

The app updates your widgets whenever you open it or come back to it. Otherwise they refresh at midnight, so a change someone else made during the day can take until your next visit to the app to appear. Countdowns tick over on their own.

A tap on a widget takes effect straight away. If you're offline, the item disappears and the change is sent the next time the app opens. If it couldn't be saved, the item comes back.

If a widget says…

  • "Open Chickadee to see today" or "Open Chickadee to load…": open the app once to refresh it.
  • "Choose an app": edit the widget and pick an app.
  • "… isn't set up for this household": that app isn't installed in the household you have open. Install it, or edit the widget to pick another.
  • "Update Chickadee to use this widget": update the app from the App Store.

Signing out of the app clears every widget. If tapping a widget does nothing, check that you're signed in.

Using Android? The Android app has its own home screen widgets for tasks, medications, streaks, countdowns, and today.
