Chickadee Bandit vs. BAND
For a group leader choosing between a free social network for the group and a roster where members see only the leader.

Which is a better fit?
Choose BAND if the group is social and wants to see each other: a feed, albums, chat, live video and a large membership, all free if you accept ads. Chickadee Bandit fits a coach, teacher or leader whose members did not choose each other, such as a youth team's families, who need announcements, RSVPs and the roll without joining a social network, and with no ads for anyone.
Where BAND shines — and where it doesn't
BAND, made by NAVER, is a private social network for a group, and it gives away more than any other free group app we have checked: a feed with comments, albums, files, chat and group calls, live broadcasts, a calendar with RSVPs, polls, surveys, sign-up sheets and attendance sheets. It pays for that with ads, and a band can grow past a thousand members.
Chickadee Bandit is the opposite shape. A team or class space is a roster: the leader posts once, members answer RSVPs and see their own attendance, and they see the leader and never each other. There is no feed and no group chat. If your group wants to be social together, BAND does that and we do not, and the table below says so row by row.
Side by side
| BAND | Chickadee Bandit | |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing | Free, with no paid plan for groups. Ad removal and extra storage are sold only in the app: on its App Store listing, ad removal is $1.99 for 30 days and 100 GB of storage for a band $16.99 for six months or $33.99 a year. | Priced by the leader's plan: a Family plan ($6/mo), or the Community add-on ($30/yr) on its own, runs a roster of up to 30 members; Group ($10/mo) rosters of 75; Organization ($30/mo) rosters of 200. Members join free. 30-day free trial with no card. |
| Ads | Ads in the feed and under posts, which BAND says are never shown to users under 18. Each member buys ad removal for themselves; we found no way to remove ads for the whole group. | No ads for anyone, on any plan, including the members who join free. |
| Group size | Up to 1,000 members by default, and no limit once the admin allows a Big Band. Up to 30 subgroups of 100. | A roster holds 30, 75 or 200 members depending on the plan. A space where members see each other holds 8 people on Family, 12 on Group or 20 on Organization. |
| Feed & chat | A social feed with comments and reactions, photo and video albums, files, 1:1 and group chat, group voice and video calls of up to 50, and live broadcasts of up to two hours. | No feed, albums or group chat. Announcements with an expiry date, and on a roster a member can message the leader and only the leader. |
| Privacy between members | Members see the member list and each other's posts. Phone numbers and birthdays stay hidden unless the admin turns on member info display, and the admin can require post approval and limit who starts a chat. | Built in: on a roster, members see the leader and never each other, and no member's contact details are shown to another. |
| Schedule & RSVPs | A calendar with Going, Maybe and virtual RSVPs, which syncs with Google, Apple and Outlook; people outside the band can RSVP with an email check. | A calendar that lands on each member's own calendar, and Event RSVPs with a live headcount and reminders only to those who have not answered. |
| Attendance, polls & sign-ups | Attendance sheets for a roll call, polls, surveys and quizzes, sign-up sheets and to-do lists, all free. | Attendance with a rate per member, polls and surveys on a roster. Sign-up sheets and carpools need a space where members see each other, of 8, 12 or 20 people. |
| Children | Children under 13 join only through BAND for Kids, with a parent's consent, and can join only private bands they are invited to. The main app is rated 12+. | No separate children's app. For a youth team, invite the parents: on a roster, no member sees another's details. |
| Platforms | iPhone, Android, the web, and desktop apps for Windows and Mac. Paid items are bought only in the phone app. | iPhone, Android and the web. |
| Beyond the group | Group communication only. | The leader and every member keep a private household of their own, with over 100 installable apps. The group's space cannot see into it. |

Or step back from both: every team and group app compared, by what each is for.
When BAND is the right call
When the group wants to be a community: a church group, an alumni class, a hobby club or a big extended family, where members know each other and the feed, the albums and the chat are the point. It is free, it holds more people than any plan of ours, and it has a live broadcast for the game or the service that we do not.
When Chickadee Bandit fits better
A group whose members did not choose each other: a youth team's families, a class, a set of clients. They need to hear from the leader, say whether they are coming, and have their attendance recorded, without joining a social network with the other families and without seeing ads. See what a coach or group leader gets.
Moving from BAND
Nothing imports from BAND. Before you leave, save the photos and files you want to keep, and download the member list if you are an admin. Then create a space as a Team or an Announcement list, put the schedule on the calendar, and share the join link. The guide to running a season without a group chat walks through the rest.
The feature list is not fixed
Every other product on this page is a fixed set of features: it does what it does, and a need it did not anticipate gets a no. Chickadee Bandit is built from small apps, and a household can add one of its own. An admin describes the app in a paragraph on the Apps page and the hub builds and installs it, using the AI credits that come with every plan; someone who writes code can start from any of the open-source apps and install their own version from a URL. A custom app gets the same checks as the ones we ship: it declares what it reads and writes, keeps its data in your household's own database, and the hub refuses anything it did not ask for.
