Chickadee Bandit

Five BAND app alternatives for a team, class or group

Where to go from BAND: GroupMe for a free chat, a private roster with no ads, Spond for a sports club, Remind for a class, or SignUpGenius for sign-ups.

Compare › BAND app alternatives

Quick answer

GroupMe if the chat was what your group used. Chickadee Bandit if members should see the leader and not each other, with no ads. Spond if you run a sports club and collect payments. Remind if you teach and families need texts. SignUpGenius if the job is sign-up sheets. None of them is the free social network BAND is: if the feed and the albums are the point, stay.

BAND gives a group more for free than anything else we have checked: a feed, albums, files, chat and calls, live broadcasts, a calendar with RSVPs, polls, sign-up sheets and attendance, for a band of a thousand members or more. If your group is social and uses most of that, most of the options below do less, and we say which part each gives up.

This list is ordered from the closest swap to the most specialised. We make the second entry and it is marked. Every price is restated from the BAND comparison or from our round-up of team and group apps, each checked against the vendor's own pages.

The list

  1. GroupMe

Best for: A group that mostly used BAND for the chat

Free, with no paid plan: a group chat of up to 5,000 with direct messages, polls, calendar events with reminders, a photo gallery, and announcement groups where only admins post. In the US, anyone can take part by ordinary text message without the app. It has no feed, attendance or sign-up sheets, and every message goes to everyone.

Cost: Free, with no paid plan: Microsoft says it does not charge for the service. No payments.

  2. Chickadee Bandit

    That's us

Best for: A leader whose members should see the leader, not each other

Not a social network: there is no feed, album or group chat, and a roster holds 30 to 200 members rather than thousands. What it does instead is the part of BAND a team or class actually needs, without the other families: announcements, a calendar on each member's own calendar, RSVPs with a headcount and reminders, attendance, polls and surveys, with members who see only the leader and no ads for anyone.

Cost: The leader sponsors the space and every family joins free. $6/mo or $60/yr on the Family plan, or the Community add-on alone at $30/yr, runs a roster of up to 30 members; Group ($10/mo) runs rosters of 75 and Organization ($30/mo or $300/yr) rosters of 200. 30-day free trial with no card. No payments, so no processing fees.

  3. Spond

Best for: A sports club that wants scheduling and payments free

Built for grassroots sport rather than any group: events with a season planner, availability requests, polls, file storage and messaging with guardian oversight for players under age, for up to 500 members, plus payment requests and fundraising. Like BAND it is free and ad-supported, and its ads cannot be removed; unlike BAND it earns on every payment the group collects.

Cost: No subscription and no paid plan: Spond earns from payments and brand partners. Each payment costs $1.00 + 3.29% in the US and Canada, paid by the group unless it passes the fee on. The ads cannot be removed. An optional club website carries a monthly fee after a free trial.

  4. Remind

Best for: A teacher or school coach who needs families reached by text

For a class, not a community: one-to-many messages that reach families by text with no smartphone needed, by email, in the app or on the web, with automatic translation into more than 90 languages and phone numbers hidden on both sides. It has no feed or albums, and we found no calendar RSVPs, sign-ups or attendance.

Cost: Remind Chat is free, for up to 10 classes of 150 participants each. Remind Hub, for up to 5,000 per class, is sold only to schools and organizations and publishes no price. No payments.

  5. SignUpGenius

Best for: Sign-up sheets and collecting money from people who will never join a group

If BAND's sign-up sheets were what you used, this is the specialist: public sheets anyone can fill in from a link without an account, reminders, waitlists on Gold, and payment collection for dues, fees and tickets. It is not a group app: no feed, chat or calendar.

Cost: Free with ads on every sign-up. Silver $11.99/mo or $107.89/yr, Gold $29.99/mo or $269.89/yr, Platinum $59.99/mo or $539.89/yr, which remove ads from 1 sign-up, 10, or all of them. Card payments cost 3.95% + $0.95 on every plan, e-checks 1.95%.

Why people look for a BAND alternative

The ads, first. BAND is free because it shows ads in the feed and under posts, and each member can only remove them for themselves.

The second reason is the shape. In a band, members see the member list and each other's posts. That is right for a church group or an alumni class, and a question for a youth team or a class whose families did not choose each other and would rather not join a social network together.

Save the albums before you go

Nothing on this list keeps a group's photos, videos and files the way BAND does, and nothing imports from it. Before you leave, save the albums and files you want to keep, and if you are an admin, download the member list.

The feature list is not fixed

Every other product on this page is a fixed set of features: it does what it does, and a need it did not anticipate gets a no. Chickadee Bandit is built from small apps, and a household can add one of its own. An admin describes the app in a paragraph on the Apps page and the hub builds and installs it, using the AI credits that come with every plan; someone who writes code can start from any of the open-source apps and install their own version from a URL. A custom app gets the same checks as the ones we ship: it declares what it reads and writes, keeps its data in your household's own database, and the hub refuses anything it did not ask for.

Where this list comes from

We make one of the products on it, and it is marked. Every claim about another product is restated from the head-to-head page that links from its name, where it was checked against that product's own site on the date shown there — nothing on this page was researched separately. The order is how close a like-for-like replacement each one is for someone leaving BAND, not a ranking of merit.
