Chickadee Bandit

Five TeamSnap alternatives for a coach or team manager

Where to go from TeamSnap: Spond for payments with no subscription, Heja for one simple team, a private roster, GroupMe for chat, or SignUpGenius for sign-ups.

Quick answer

Spond if collecting payments was the reason, and you would rather not pay a subscription. Heja if you coach one team and want something simpler. Chickadee Bandit if the job is announcing, RSVPs and the roll, with families kept out of each other's contact lists and no ads. GroupMe if the chat was all you used. SignUpGenius if the sign-ups and fees were. None of them keeps TeamSnap's stats or lineups.

TeamSnap is the most complete team product most coaches will meet: schedules and rosters, lineups, game statistics, a live game feed, drills from pro-league partners, and invoicing for team fees, with registration for clubs and leagues. If your team uses most of that, most of the options below do less, and we say which part each gives up.

This list is ordered from the closest swap to the most specialised. We make the third entry and it is marked. Every price is restated from the TeamSnap comparison or from our round-up of team and group apps, each checked against the vendor's own pages.

The list

  1. Spond

Best for: A club that wants to keep collecting payments without paying a subscription

The closest swap if TeamSnap's invoicing was the reason you used it: payment requests and fundraising with no plan to pay for, and events, availability requests, polls, file storage and messaging with guardian oversight for players under age, for up to 500 members. The trade is ads that cannot be removed, a per-payment fee the group pays unless it passes it on, and no game stats, lineups or drills.

Cost: No subscription and no paid plan: Spond earns from payments and brand partners. Each payment costs $1.00 + 3.29% in the US and Canada, paid by the group unless it passes the fee on. The ads cannot be removed. An optional club website carries a monthly fee after a free trial.

  2. Heja

Best for: One volunteer-coached team that wants the simplest app parents will install

Smaller and simpler than TeamSnap: schedule, RSVPs, team chat and documents free for one admin, with polls, reminders, attendance statistics, payments and the desktop version on Team Pro. Like TeamSnap, a paid plan removes ads only for coaches and admins; parents keep them unless the team pays for Pro Max. We found no game stats or live scores.

Cost: Free with ads. Team Pro from $8.33, per team; Heja's pricing page does not state the period, and the price shown at checkout varies with the number of teams. Team Pro Max, which removes ads for every member, publishes no price. In-app payments, on Pro only, cost the payer about 2–5%.

  3. Chickadee Bandit

    That's us

Best for: A coach who mainly announces, asks who is coming and takes the roll

Not a replacement for TeamSnap's sports features or payments: we collect no fees and keep no stats, scores or lineups. What it does instead is the roster: families see the coach and never each other, RSVPs and the headcount are on every plan with reminders only to the families who have not answered, the roll shows who is drifting, and no one sees an ad.

Cost: The leader sponsors the space and every family joins free. $6/mo or $60/yr on the Family plan, or the Community add-on alone at $30/yr, runs a roster of up to 30 members; Group ($10/mo) runs rosters of 75 and Organization ($30/mo or $300/yr) rosters of 200. 30-day free trial with no card. No payments, so no processing fees.

  4. GroupMe

Best for: A team that only ever used TeamSnap for the chat

Free, with no paid plan, and anyone can join, in the US even by ordinary text message. It does the chat and nothing else a team manager needs: no attendance record, assignments or invoices, and every message goes to everyone.

Cost: Free, with no paid plan: Microsoft says it does not charge for the service. No payments.

  5. SignUpGenius

Best for: Snack, volunteer and ride sign-ups, with or without money

If TeamSnap's assignments and invoices were the part you used, this is the specialist: public sign-up sheets anyone can fill in from a link without an account, reminders, waitlists on Gold, and payment collection for fees and tickets. It is not a team app: no schedule, availability or chat.

Cost: Free with ads on every sign-up. Silver $11.99/mo or $107.89/yr, Gold $29.99/mo or $269.89/yr, Platinum $59.99/mo or $539.89/yr, which remove ads from 1 sign-up, 10, or all of them. Card payments cost 3.95% + $0.95 on every plan, e-checks 1.95%.

Why people look for a TeamSnap alternative

The price and the ads, first. TeamSnap is priced per team, the free plan stops at 15 players and does not track who is coming, and a paid plan removes the ads for the coach and managers but not for the parents.

The second reason is the chat. On a single team, TeamSnap's team chat and direct messages cannot be switched off, and each family has to mark its own phone number and email private. A coach who wants families kept apart looks for something built that way.

Decide where the money and the stats go first

Nothing on this list keeps game statistics or sets a lineup the way TeamSnap does. Spond, Heja and SignUpGenius collect payments; GroupMe and Chickadee Bandit collect none. Before you leave, export the roster, save the invoices and the season's stats, and decide how next season's fees will be paid.

The feature list is not fixed

Every other product on this page is a fixed set of features: it does what it does, and a need it did not anticipate gets a no. Chickadee Bandit is built from small apps, and a household can add one of its own. An admin describes the app in a paragraph on the Apps page and the hub builds and installs it, using the AI credits that come with every plan; someone who writes code can start from any of the open-source apps and install their own version from a URL. A custom app gets the same checks as the ones we ship: it declares what it reads and writes, keeps its data in your household's own database, and the hub refuses anything it did not ask for.

Where this list comes from

We make one of the products on it, and it is marked. Every claim about another product is restated from the head-to-head page that links from its name, where it was checked against that product's own site on the date shown there — nothing on this page was researched separately. The order is how close a like-for-like replacement each one is for someone leaving TeamSnap, not a ranking of merit.
